What a vehicle history check shows, and what it can't

Key takeaways

  • A free check uses official DVLA and DVSA data: vehicle details, tax status, MOT history and mileage.
  • A Full Check adds finance, stolen and write-off status, keeper history and a valuation.
  • No check covers the engine, gearbox or clutch, or proves the car in front of you matches the record.
  • Run the free check on every car, and a Full Check on the one you are about to pay for.

A vehicle history check shows what official and industry records say about a car: its details, tax and MOT status, mileage, and with a deeper check, finance, stolen and write-off status and past keepers. It does not show how the car drives, what is wrong mechanically, or whether the one in front of you matches the record.

Knowing which is which stops you trusting a report for things it was never designed to find.

What a free check shows

A free check built on official DVLA and DVSA data covers the basics:

That is enough to screen cars before you waste a journey. It tells you whether the car is taxed, whether it has had its tests and whether the mileage and advisories look sensible. The GOV.UK MOT history service holds the same test records. For what to look for in the mileage line, see our guide to how to spot a clocked car.

What a Full Check adds

A deeper history check pulls in data from beyond DVLA and DVSA. Typically that is:

These are the things a seller cannot be relied on to volunteer, and the things that cost buyers the most when missed. What Car? makes the same point: a history check is how you find out about past write-off status, theft and outstanding finance.

What neither can tell you

Question Free check Full Check Your own eyes
Is it taxed and MOT'd? Yes Yes Check the documents
Is the mileage consistent? Yes Yes Check wear
Is there finance on it? No Yes Ask the seller
Has it been written off? No Yes Inspect repairs
Is the engine healthy? No No Test drive
Is the gearbox smooth? No No Test drive
Is the seller genuine? No No Meet at their address
Does the car match the record? No No Compare

Two items in that table cause most of the trouble.

Mechanical condition. A history check reads records. It cannot hear a rattling timing chain or feel a slipping clutch. An MOT confirms roadworthiness on the day it was tested, not the health of the engine.

Matching the record to the car. A check describes the car registered to that plate. It cannot know whether the car in front of you is that car. Compare the make, colour, fuel type and year to the record, and check the VIN on the car against the V5C. Carwow's guide to car cloning recommends the same. If anything differs, stop and ask why.

How reliable is the data

Official records are only as complete as the reports behind them. A lender has to report finance for it to appear. A write-off has to be recorded by the insurer. A history check is a strong safeguard that catches most problems, but it is not a guarantee, which is why it should sit alongside an inspection rather than replace one.

A sensible order

  1. Run the free check on every car you are considering.
  2. View the car and compare it with the record.
  3. Run a Full Check on the car you are about to pay for.
  4. Get an independent inspection if the car is expensive or you are unsure.

This keeps cost down and catches the expensive problems at the stage where they are cheapest to find.

Common questions

Do I need to register to run a free check?

Not for the SMART check at vinfo.app. It needs no sign-up and uses official DVLA and DVSA data.

Does a clean report mean the car is safe to buy?

No. It means nothing worrying has been recorded. It cannot tell you about the engine, gearbox or clutch, and it cannot confirm the car in front of you is the one on the record.

Is a Full Check worth it on a cheap car?

Finance and write-off risks exist at any price, and cheap cars are the ones buyers are most tempted to skip checking. Compare the cost of the check with the cost of getting it wrong.

Can a history check replace a viewing?

No. A check tells you what has been recorded. A viewing and a test drive tell you what the car is like today.

Start with the free check
